Duo, Trio or Quartet?

• Most music is written for quartet.  This is the ideal ensemble as it gives the 'richest', 'fullest' sound.  A quartet is advisable for large functions.
• Most music can be adapted for trio.  This ensemble is good for smaller functions, as the sound produced is softer and less 'rich' than that of a quartet. 
• A duo is softer again and has a much 'thinner' texture.  Most duo combinations are advisable only for very small functions, however duos which involve percussion instruments (eg flute & marimba, 2 percussionists) produce a louder sound and are therefore appropriate for medium sized functions.
